Dear Friends and Allies,

Here are four ways you can fight the proposal to bring high level nuclear waste to New Mexico:

1.  JULY 9TH PUBLIC MEETING WEBINAR/CALL-IN TO RECEIVE COMMENTS ON HOLTEC/ELEA CISF DEIS

As announced by the NRC:

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has currently scheduled on final public meeting via webinar or call-in, soliciting comments on a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for Holtec International/Eddy Lea Energy Alliance's (Holtec/ELEA) proposed Consolidated Interim Storage Facility (CISF) for spent nuclear fuel in Lea County, New Mexico.  The draft EIS evaluates potential environmental impacts of Holtec’s request to build and operate the proposed CISF.

The public meeting webinars will be accessible to the public by navigating, on the day and time of the meeting, to the internet link below, and entering the event number associated with the date of the webinar when prompted.  Telephone access is also provided by dialing the telephone number and entering the passcode provided below.  The NRC staff will present the results of the draft environmental impact analysis and receive the public’s comments on the draft report.  The NRC invites members of the public to attend the public meeting webinar and to present oral comments on the DEIS.  The public meeting webinar/call-in will commence at 3:00 pm Mountain Daylight Time (MDT) [5pm Eastern Time], on July 9, 2020.

Suggestions for comments:

There are two possible avenues when making comments:

3.  Speak to the topics in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement. To do this you can peruse the document itself (link below) and comment on the topics most important to you or you can speak to the list of topics below which are all covered inadequately in the DEIS e.g.  'The DEIS does not cover issues regarding groundwater at the site adequately.'

This approach might be useful in amplifying the technical comments of the state or one of the grassroots groups fighting storage of high level nuclear waste in NM and west Texas.

4.  Speak to any topic that seems important to you. Since the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has never met a nuke it didn't like or license, perhaps your most important audience is your representatives or fellow citizens encouraging them to fight back against this crazy, dangerous project.  A number of licensed projects have been stopped through state and people power.  The video under the title 'Holtec Proposal' on this web site covers many of the important reasons to stand against this project, as do other articles, letters and comments on this site.

Some of the topics covered inadequately in the DEIS: Environmental Justice, Transportation,  Surface Water Resources, Ground Water Resources,  Ground Water Use, Ground Water Quality, Protected Species and Species of Concern, Impacts from the Proposed Facility.

Groups that can help you with your comments are listed at the end of the video under the button labeled 'Holtec Proposal'

Keep the topic of bringing high level nuclear waste to New Mexico in the limelight: Talk to your friends, talk to your representatives, write letters to the editor, call in to talk shows, speak up at meetings etc.

New Mexico has been promised five in person meetings with NRC concerning the Draft Environmental Impact Statement. Hopefully these will be held at a time when we all feel safer in relation to Coved 19.  Stay alert to when these meetings will be and once you know the places and dates post the information to your groups, friends and family and attend.  You can refer to this website to be updated.
